- Modernism on SteroidsCasa Palestra, The Domestic Project
- Abstract
- Luis Castillo Villegas writes about OMA’s
version of a gym or a Casa palestra,
designed in 1986 for the 17th Triennial of
Milan. The architecture seems simple: it is
a ‘bent’ reproduction of the Barcelona
Pavilion by Mies van der Rohe. Nevertheless,
there are notable differences, such as the
use of materials and the programmatic
intensity. The most symbolic decision in
the design is the purloin of the original
sculpture in Mies’s pavilion by Georg Kolbe,
replaced by Koolhaas with the statue of a
naked female bodybuilder.
