        Abstract
This issue of OASE magazine sheds light on a set of modernist architectural approaches that have languished in the shadow of their canonical counterparts. In this way, OASE offers points of departure for rethinking contemporary design attitudes.

The so-called shadow canon epitomises an alternative set of design sensibilities and attitudes toward typology, tectonics and composition and advocates the presence of tradition as a means of rearticulating the modern. This double edition of Oase will have great relevance for a contemporary national and international discourse and practice characterised by a relentless search for more nuanced approaches to the built environment.
